Cooking food at home can be very enjoyable, but it does also release a lot of grease and steam into the air. Where does it all go? Preferably, it should go up your kitchen exhaust fan, or range hood. This is very important, since you otherwise could get stuck with smells, as well as, moisture damage left behind in your kitchen.

A kitchen exhaust fan should ideally be mounted right above the stove top so as to catch as much as possible of the fumes. The fan should be powerful enough to move all the air necessary, and the ducts leading away from the fan should go as straight as possible and vent outside, away from any air intakes, windows or doors. It is very important that the vent is covered so that bugs and pests aren’t attracted to the smells coming from your kitchen. If there are filters in your kitchen exhaust fan, you should make sure to clean them, since the abundance of fat that can collect in them could pose a fire hazard.

Could Lightning Be Dangerous For You? https://singingriverinspections.com/could-lightning-be-dangerous-for-you/ Sun, 31 Mar 2019 01:25:09 +0000 https://singingriverinspections.com/?p=571 The post Could Lightning Be Dangerous For You? appeared first on Singing River Property Inspections.

Watching a lightning storm can be very fascinating, but it does fill some people with terror. The odds of you to be hit by a lightning strike is about one in 13,000. This should reassure you that you are very unlikely to be hit by lightning. This doesn’t mean that lightning doesn’t pose a threat to you, however. A lightning strike on or near your house could do significant damage, and even cause a fire. While most modern homes are equipped with a lightning rod, which will lead the energy from a lightning strike safely to the ground, the same isn’t true for trees and other tall objects around your home. A tree hit by lightning could catch fire which then could spread to your home, or it could splinter and fall over and crash into your home, damaging it severely.

You should make sure that any valuable electronics you have in your home are unplugged during a lightning storm to protect them from damaging surges.

The Damage Rust Can Cause https://singingriverinspections.com/damage-rust-can-cause/ Thu, 21 Feb 2019 03:57:07 +0000 https://singingriverinspections.com/?p=567 The post The Damage Rust Can Cause appeared first on Singing River Property Inspections.

Wherever there is metal, water and air together, there is a chance that the metal will start to rust. While this is a natural process, it could be a major concern for a homeowner. While rust might just be a cosmetic problem, other times it could pose a danger. For example, if you have an electrical panel that has a lot of rust on it, that could cause a fire. If that is the case for you, you need to have an electrician take a look at it as soon as possible. If the rebar inside of cement fixtures of your home starts to rust, that could cause structural issues. The issue will just get worse the longer it is left untreated, since the rusting rebar will expand, causing the cement to crack and expose more rebar to the elements.

Rust removal is a meticulous process, since leaving any trace of rust behind will make it so the problem will resurface again. Just painting over the rust will not help, since the rust will keep spreading underneath the paint.

Are Your Windows Leaking? https://singingriverinspections.com/are-your-windows-leaking/ Tue, 29 Jan 2019 02:04:50 +0000 https://singingriverinspections.com/?p=563 The post Are Your Windows Leaking? appeared first on Singing River Property Inspections.

Your windows are the most likely culprit for heat loss in your home. This is especially so if the windows are older and not sealed as well as they used to be. Fortunately, you can spend a little bit of time and work to make sure that they are in as good shape as possible.

First, you want to check that there are no cracks around the window. These can let a lot of air escape and should be sealed well. You can use a flashlight and shine it around the edge with someone spotting on the other side to find any cracks. If you find cracks, use weatherstripping and caulk to seal them up.

If you find rot in the wood around your window, it is important that you take the time to clean it up very well. Just a little bit of rot left behind will continue to eat away at your window frame. It is better to cut away some of the healthy wood to make sure nothing is left.

Things To Think About When Your Roof Is Aging https://singingriverinspections.com/things-think-roof-aging/ Thu, 27 Dec 2018 04:49:09 +0000 https://singingriverinspections.com/?p=559 The post Things To Think About When Your Roof Is Aging appeared first on Singing River Property Inspections.

You might not want to think about the age of your roof, knowing how expensive it can be to replace, but the reality is that if you don’t replace your roof, you expose your home to the elements and risk damaging it. In general, depending on the material it is made of, a roof will last 15-20 years, but some materials will last much longer than that.

You should not just go out and hire the first contractor that you find, instead it is very important to take the time to compare reviews, and if possible speak with someone who has used the contractor in the past. Don’t let the cost be your major concern, it is worth paying extra for a job well done.

If you are thinking about switching roofing materials, you should have your contractor make sure that the current framing can take the weight if the new material is heavier.

How to Keep Rodents Away https://singingriverinspections.com/keep-rodents-away/ Wed, 28 Nov 2018 03:10:09 +0000 https://singingriverinspections.com/?p=555 The post How to Keep Rodents Away appeared first on Singing River Property Inspections.

Rodents –  they carry disease and do damage to your property, so keeping them out of your home is very important. The problem is, however, that they are everywhere and once they have made your home their home, it is really difficult to get rid of them.

Usually, there are some signs that you can be on the lookout for to let you know that there are rodents in your home. For instance, you can notice a musty, stale smell coming from places where they hide out. They like dark places where they can hide, so keeping the area in and around your home uncluttered is an important first step. You might also be able to notice nesting materials gathered together. Rats will usually use whatever is available, such as, paper they have shredded up, or some type of fabric.

It might also be possible to spot where the rodents have gained access into your home. They might have scratched their way through a crumbling cement wall or a wooden part of your house. If you see damage like that, patch it up with a sturdy metal mesh, or something similar, to prevent further access.

Sump Pumps https://singingriverinspections.com/sump-pumps/ Wed, 31 Oct 2018 04:01:15 +0000 https://singingriverinspections.com/?p=550 The post Sump Pumps appeared first on Singing River Property Inspections.

What is a sump pump? Simply put, it’s a pump that is situated in your basement preventing water from flooding your basement. They predominantly are found in homes that are situated in areas that are flat, where heavy rains are common.

What happens is that the level of the groundwater rises and makes it in to your basement through cracks in the foundation. The pump sits in a trench under the lowest part of your basement and is equipped with a sensor that will turn the pump on when the water level is rising. You can test the operation of your sump pump for yourself by pouring some water into the trench and making sure that the pump turns on. Well maintained, your pump will last about ten years before it needs a replacement. It is important that you keep it clean and regularly check that the float that turns on the pump is not stuck. You should be more attentive to this when seasons change or if it has not have been used for a while.

How To Keep Your Home Insulated https://singingriverinspections.com/keep-home-insulated/ Sun, 30 Sep 2018 00:45:22 +0000 https://singingriverinspections.com/?p=546 The post How To Keep Your Home Insulated appeared first on Singing River Property Inspections.

Do you feel like you spend a lot more money on heating and cooling your home than you should? If that is the case, you should take a closer look at your insulation. If your house isn’t properly insulated, the outdoor temperature will have a great effect on your home, and running cost will increase in turn.

The effectiveness of insulation is measured by its R-value. Even though the insulation you buy might have a certain R-value, the way you install it will also determine how effective it is at keeping the temperature of your home at the level you want it.

If you compress insulation, it actually lowers its R-value. Instead, you should make sure that it fits in the cavity where you place it without compressing it.

It is fairly easy to make an assessment of the current effectiveness of your insulation using an infrared thermometer. This will tell you if you have areas in your home where your insulation isn’t working up to expectation.

Vinyl Siding https://singingriverinspections.com/vinyl-siding/ Wed, 22 Aug 2018 02:05:55 +0000 https://singingriverinspections.com/?p=542 The post Vinyl Siding appeared first on Singing River Property Inspections.

]]>

If you go out in your neighborhood right now and start looking at the siding of each house, what you most likely will notice is that many homes have vinyl siding. In fact, it is by far more common than any other siding material.

The main reason for this is that vinyl siding is a lot cheaper than other types of siding, but it is also fairly durable and low maintenance.

Many of the common problems that other types of siding experience are not a problem with vinyl. Unlike metal siding, vinyl is hard to dent and will not rust. Unlike wood siding, vinyl will not rot or attract wood-boring insects.

To keep your siding looking good, a pressure wash will take care of any dirt or mold buildup. Additionally, the color does not fade easily.

You do want to exercise care when grilling too close to the siding, as extreme heat could make it melt. If you live in an area where it gets very cold, that could turn the vinyl brittle and make it more prone to breaking.

Replacing Your Roof https://singingriverinspections.com/replacing-your-roof/ Tue, 24 Jul 2018 01:13:15 +0000 https://singingriverinspections.com/?p=537 The post Replacing Your Roof appeared first on Singing River Property Inspections.

What is the state of your roof? Is it time to replace it? Depending on what roofing material was used on your home, it has a limited lifespan, usually between 15 and 20 years. Replacing a roof is necessary when that time is up, otherwise you run risk of leaks and other problems.

You might have some thoughts on what material you would like to use, and here are some points to keep in mind.

More expensive materials, such as, metal, tile and slate are more durable, and could be a worthwhile investment. However, if you are switching from a lighter material such a wood or asphalt, you should have your roofing contractor determine whether the framing of your roof can bear the additional load or not.

Depending on the material you want to use, installation could be different, and this could be an additional cost to consider.

Make sure you do your research on the roofing company you will use, since the quality of the work can differ greatly.
